GLISA CELEBRATES 5 YEARS, 5 CONTINENTS, AND 5,000 REGISTRANTS! On its 5th anniversary, GLISA congratulates Copenhagen, 2009 World OutGames host, for surpassing registrant benchmark.

(May 20, 2009 – Montreal, Canada) The Gay and Lesbian International Sport Association (GLISA) congratulates the Copenhagen World OutGames organizing team for surpassing the benchmark of 5,000 registered participants for the upcoming 2nd World OutGames, July 25th through August 1st.

“This is a significant event in the life of GLISA and the OutGames”, stated Julia Applegate Co- President of GLISA International.” “It was just five year ago that GLISA was established and it’s grown into 5 Continental Association and literally hundreds of member organizations”.

To celebrate its 5th anniversary and its 5 Continental Associations, the GLISA board of directors wanted to further support the 2nd World OutGames by sponsoring the “5-5-5 Campaign” which is awarding 5 sports registrations, 5 culture registrations, and 5 conference registrations to be shared with the 5 continental areas! GLISA North America, Asia Pacific and Central & South America are identifying their proposed recipients through their own organizational connections. GLISA Africa and Europe are working through delegates and contact people to identify recipients. Recipients can be one person (for sports, culture, and conference) or multiple persons (one for sport, one for culture, one for conference) for each Continental Association.

GLISA International will fund the Sports and Human Rights registrations and Copenhagen has agreed to provide the funding for the Cultural registrations from each continental association to attend the OutGames in Copenhagen.

“It’s astonishing, and a credit to the organizing team and the OutGames event, that in these difficult financial times more than 5,000 people from around the world, including over 1,000 participants from North America, will be participating in the Copenhagen OutGames,” stated Greg Larocque, President of GLISA North America. “These thousands of registrants and the hundreds of event volunteers and sponsors should be very proud. They’re winners, every one of them!”

International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia 2009

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Everyone’s invited to support May 17 International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.

Homophobia is a negative attitude or feeling, a discomfort or an aversion towards gays and lesbians or towards homosexuality in general. It is also the rejection of gay and lesbian people or people considered as such, and of all things associated with them, such as gender nonconformity. Both on a conscious or sub-conscious level, homophobia surfaces in various ways and can even be internalised.

Variants of homophobia include:
Bi-phobia: aversion towards bisexual people or bisexuality;
Gay-phobia: aversion towards gay men or male homosexuality;
Lesbophobia: aversion towards lesbian women or female homosexuality.

Transphobia is a negative attitude or feeling, a discomfort or an aversion towards transgender people, transsexuals, people who are transitioning, and people who are intersexed.

For 2009 two equally important campaigns are launched to highlight homophobia and transphobia.

Homosexuality Knows No Borders

Homosexuality Knows No Borders

Homosexuality Knows No Borders” emphasizes that homosexuality is a universal fact and that borders cannot be forced on it. The Campaign is aimed towards helping people integrate within their host society and to make ethno-cultural communities aware of sexual diversity issues. In addition, LGBT people and their communities will benefit from their own community’s improved openness toward their issues.

International Appeal to Reject Transphobia and Respect Gender Identity

IDAHO

Every day, people who live at variance to expected gender norms (transgender, transsexual, transvestites,…) face violence, abuse, rape, torture and hate crime all over the world, in their home as well as in the public arena. Though most cases of violence never get documented, we know that in the first weeks of 2009 alone, Trans women have been murdered in Honduras, Serbia and in the USA. Trans men are equally victims of hate crimes, prejudice and discrimination despite their frequent social and cultural invisibility.

Therefore, organisations of Trans People and Human Rights defense organisations have come together to launch an International appeal to respect gender identity and reject transphobia.

International Appeal to reject transphobia and respect gender identity

If you are an organisation, entity, local authority, celebrity or personality, and want to support this Appeal, please inform IDAHOMOPHOBIA.org by sending an email at contact@idahomophobia.org. Your name will be added in the list of « first signatories » that will be presented to the press and to the wider public at the launch of this campaign on the 2009 edition of the IDAHO, around May 17th.

It may seem that these days sexual orientation and gender identity is getting less and less of an issue and people who live their gender identity and their sexuality differently from the majority enjoy comfortable and secure social and political spaces to do so.

When you have a closer look though, you will witness that there is increased homophobia and transphobia in a majority of places ; and the XXth century was actually one of the most homophobic periods ever in History.

Everywhere homosexuality and gender variance is being discriminated against ; in more that 80 countries in the world, same sex relationships are criminalised and in 7 of them, death penalty can be enforced.

Intolerance, prejudice, hate, ignorance and fear still largely prevail in individuals, groups, States, international institutions, etc…

This is why this international day to fight against homophobia and transphobia and for sexual freedom was created.

Philippine Forum on Sports, Culture, Sexuality and Human Rights (TEAM PILIPINAS), a registered non-stock, non-profit organization, working to promote and strengthen human rights, sexual and gender diversity and equality, and peace in the Philippines joins the world in celebrating May 17 – International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. get-your-ass-cph

Already, thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) athletes, artists, activists and our supporters have booked their place in World Outgames’ extensive program of sports, cultural and human rights activities. And the local community is fired up as well.

Beginning with the opening ceremony at City Hall square, the city center will be shaking and shimmering to the beats of percussionists and live bands, dj’s and choirs. There will be picnics and barbecues, outdoor cinema and theatre, circus and artistic installations and lots of dancing in the streets.

Among the many tasty treats we have in store is the OutCities route along which public parks and squares will be jamming with the cultural vibes of Antwerp, Melbourne, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Tel Aviv and Denmark’s very own Aarhus.

The city will be as queer and saucy as the new Outgames ad developed in cooperation with the advertising agency Reputation and running from February in Diva, Gay Times, Passport Magazine, Winq, QX, Siegessäule, Hinnerk, Mix Brasil, Junior, PLUguide, Leo, Gab, Exit, Rik, Du & Ich, L.mag, Fridae, Sydney Star Observer, Melbourne Morning Star and Puffta Media.

Outgames subsidises developing world participants

By Shannon Kiely

In an effort to help bring together people from countries in the developing world that suppress open expressions of homosexuality, the 2009 Copenhagen Outgames’ Outreach Program will subsidize participants of their “Love of Freedom–Freedom from Love” conference.

The three-day conference will focus on the concerns and issues of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) individuals, who will participate in the 2009 Copenhagen Outgames – an international event started in Montreal in 2006 that offers LGBT individuals and supporters the chance to compete in athletic tournaments of 38 different disciplines.

Stephen Barris, the head of Communications at the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA), thought it was crucial that conference attendees represented diverse areas of the world.

“[The Outreach program] creates a space, a platform where people who can’t afford to travel can share the work they’re doing,” Barris said.

Expected to bring together 1,000 attendees without regard to their sexual orientation, the conference will focus on the global struggle to fight discrimination against LGBT individuals. It will feature keynote speakers, including gay Muslim filmmaker Parvez Sharma, and up 90 workshops on themes ranging from family and relationships to LGBT history.

Julie Thaarup, the project manager for Copenhagen’s 2009 Outreach, explained why the participation of delegates from the developing world was crucial.

“The conference will create awareness and build knowledge so that participants can affect change in their country,” Thaarup said.

Bruce Amoroto, the coordinator of Team Pilipinas, further explained the importance of the conference.

“For gays and lesbians who are either out or not out it builds on their confidence,” said Amoroto. “When they go back to their country, they can share with other people, and inspire them to come out or be strong with whatever discrimination they have here in the country. “People are still not comfortable or fully accepting so these are communities who live silently.”

Amoroto added that Team Pilipinas – named after the Filipino word for the Philippines – is a good example of more localized outreach by Outgames participants: the team networks with smaller LGBT communities through sports that allow locals to share ideas and information about sexual diversity without attracting hostile attention.

“To be able to talk about sexual health, sexual rights, and sexual diversity you need to take other avenues that won’t be strongly opposed by [Catholic] church and other conservatives,” said Amoroto.

The added that although the intensity has decreased in recent years, bystanders of Manila’s annual Pride March still heckle and call the participants names.

While the Outreach Program only grants funding to enable individuals to attend the conference, chosen applicants can apply for additional funding for sporting and cultural events at the Outgames.

The program aims to fund 200 people from Eastern Europe and 200 from the Developing World, with an equal number of men and women. The program has so far secured enough funding to subsidize 130 participants. 170 applications have been received.

The online application requires hopefuls to declare their annual income, list any sport, cultural, human rights, or community organizations they are involved in, and submit a 100-word explanation of why they would like to participate in the 2009 Outgames. The Outreach Program will be accepting applications until October 1.

The Straits Games 2008 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The Straits Games 2008 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Dear Friends,

To foster the spirit of friendship and promote an healthy lifestyle in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, The Straits Games (TSG) started as an annual sports event between Leadership Programme for Gays (LPG), Malaysia, formerly known as Leadership Programme Graduates, and Men After Work (MAW) of Singapore. With the rapid growing interest in TSG, its participants now include those from Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and the Philippines. The Straits Games 2008 (TSG2008KL) is happening on 10-12 October in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The seventh edition of TSG will be an even bigger schedule of sports than in 2007 by adding a tennis championship and reintroducing squash to the regular sports badminton, bowling, and volleyball.

The Philippine Forum on Sports, Culture, Sexuality and Human Rights (TEAM PILIPINAS) is a network of athletes, advocates and academics working to achieve a culture of human rights, sexual and gender diversity and equality in the country. As part of TEAM PILIPINAS’ work is to bring about the visibility and representation of Filipinos in international LGBT sporting, cultural and human rights events, we see the Philippine participation in TSG as timely and essential. As we are a community-based and non-profit organization, we are very much reliant on donations from individuals and groups that stand up for the dignity and equal human rights of LGBTs in the Philippines.

Organizing the delegation entails costs on transportation, accommodation, food and uniform as well as on information-education-communication materials required to encourage groups and individuals to join the delegation.

We hope you could help us in our work by making a contribution or donation to TEAM PILIPINAS. Your support means our success. Your contribution means that we can continue our work in deepening positive visibility for the LGBT community.

Sincerely,

Bruce Amoroto
